Volunteer Opportunities

Junior Achievement of Rhode Island

The Center for Women in Finance and Leadership has established a strong partnership with Junior Achievement of Rhode Island to help deliver Financial Literacy curriculum in our local community schools. This type of volunteer opportunity gives students the ability to practice the financial knowledge you learn here at Bryant while also serving as a role model to young children. The personal benefits of sharing your time and knowledge with students is extremely rewarding and something the Bryant community has an opportunity to experience.

In addition, to in classroom volunteer opportunities, Junior Achievement RI has developed a program where volunteers can record a short video with a quick lesson plan for a variety of different financial topics to be used by teachers to supplement their class discussions. Volunteers can select what topics they would like to discuss and are welcome to be creative in how you present the material.

Testimonials

During my time at Bryant, Professor Derderian introduced me to Junior Achievement of Rhode Island. This program was a way for me to use my knowledge of finance in a real-world setting, while helping others and giving back to the community. I spent one day working with third graders in the Warwick Public School System. I was given a premade lesson plan, from which my buddy Audrey Jones and I taught third graders how to earn, spend, save, and donate. Junior Achievement did a great job of making sure Audrey and I were prepared for our experience.

Now that I have graduated, I hope to continue doing volunteer opportunities with Junior Achievement. I highly encourage students to take opportunities like Junior Achievement and run with it. My one-day experience helped me practice my public speaking, taught me how to adequately explain finance topics to those who have little to no experience, and was just a really fun experience overall. I highly recommend it!

My experience with creating a video for Junior Achievement was very smooth and such an easy process. I was able to interview my boss, Matthew Sweeney, about his experience of owning an RIA firm and working as an Investment Advisor Representative. He was able to give me insight on why it’s important for high school students to start investing for their future and how to manage their money now. This was a rewarding experience as I was able to help students interested in financial services become more knowledgeable in their options career wise. I was able to work with very kind staff at Junior Achievement who explained why this mission was important and allowed those participating to select a topic that interests them to and utilize their creativity.
